1. Are there different types of orthotics?
Yes, there are numerous types available. They can be broadly divided into three categories. Custom prescription, custom prefabricated and basic prefabricated.
Custom prescription
These are highly specific, and are custom made in our commercial orthotics laboratory to a specific prescription supplied by our Podiatrists, which follows a comprehensive assessment.
Custom prefabricated
These are very effective prefabricated orthotics manufactured out of a polyethylene foam that is both heat and pressure reactive. They are then further modified to your needs with the addition of various foam materials to positively influence the way your feet and lower limb function.
Basic prefabricated
These are very effective prefabricated orthotics manufactured out of a polyethylene foam that is both heat and pressure reactive.
2. How do orthotics work?
Orthotics work by modifying and optimising the way your feet and lower limb interact with the ground, thus manipulating the forces acting upon them.
3. Will I have to buy new shoes?
We will work with you and attempt to manufacture a device that suits your existing shoe choices. However, at times part of the problem is the shoes that we wear. If this is found to be the case, you can be confident that we will offer you the best footwear advice with your function, fashion and comfort needs carefully considered. Orthotics can be manufactured to be generic, to fit into a wide array of footwear, or highly specific for a given shoe, sport or activity.
4. Are orthotics uncomfortable?
Orthotics should not be uncomfortable. A custom manufactured device should work seamlessly with your footwear and activity to provide the ultimate in comfort.
5. Do I need orthotics?
Not everybody needs to wear orthotics. They are simply a tool that is available to us to influence the way your feet and lower limb function. For many people they are extremely effective, for others they will be of little benefit. A number of people require them only for a short period of time (for example, getting over an injury), whilst others will receive a lifetime of benefit from their use. A comprehensive examination will be required in order to determine whether orthotics may be beneficial for you.
6. How long do orthotics last?
Custom prescription devices can often last approximately 5 years, whilst prefabricated orthotics usually last up to 1 year.
